I think a balance of both would be best. Market competition can encourage companies to make better quality products than their consumers, but it can also lead them to get cheap and sloppy. Fair prices are not only about prices being affordable, but prices being just for the quality of an item or service. Consumer protections regulate prices and therefore regulate how companies can behave.
